Women’s Basics

Back to top of page

This comprehensive, 18- to 20-hour program covers a wide range of personal safety skills including physical skills, verbal strategies, boundary setting skills, awareness and avoidance skills, in stranger and familiar relationships.  The program also covers psychological strategies and mental readiness.  Skills are practiced in interactive scenarios enabling students to learn to assess a situation and respond quickly and appropriately while in an adrenalized state. Physical skills are safe, full-contact and full-force with fully padded instructors trained in recreating common assault scenarios.

Six sessions over six weeks or four sessions over two weeks.

Men’s Basics

Using the same teaching philosophy as the Women’s Basics class, Men’s Basics includes full-contact, full-force training scenarios taught over 15 hours.  Physical skills, verbal strategies and psychological readiness are geared specifically for the male consciousness and physical anatomy. Men are encouraged to use their brains and strategy, not brawn. Practice scenarios are contextualized for the types of assaults in which men are most likely to be targeted.

ADVANCED PROGRAMS

Our Advanced Classes developed from the many “what if?” questions posed by students. What if I’m attacked in bed? What if my assailant has a weapon? What if there is more than one assailant? Understanding a need to expand our curriculum, we developed several classes to address these questions. Our research to create these solutions is unique in the industry and the source of our cutting edge programs.

Advanced Basics

Advanced Basics focuses on bringing more environmental realism and more complexity into assault scenarios.  Skills are built upon verbal and physical techniques learned in the Basics class.  Students learn to fight kinesthetically wearing a blindfold, in a bed, in an enclosed space, and with environmental weapons.  Class focuses on layering strategies as appropriate to escalating levels of threatening behaviours: from complex verbal dissuation and deescalation, to simple physical dissuation tactics, to full-force physical self-defense.

Three 5-hour sessions over two weeks
Prerequisite: Men’s/Women’s/Mixed Gender Basics and Instructor Approval

Partners (Open to all genders)

Back to top of pageDSC00015
This 12-hour course offers strategies for you and your partner.  This class is great for people who spend a lot of time together, such as couples, co-workers, good friends, or parents and teens.  The class offers an exciting and sophisticated look at teamwork and partnership with an emphasis on communication and strategy.  This course opens the ongoing conversation about personal boundaries and how they change over time.  The partner teams learn to develop signals to work together.

Prerequisite for Both Participants: Women’s/Mixed-Gender Basics or Men’s Basics

The EMPOWERED FamilyDorn Kids-3

Children Ages 6-12 & Their Parent(s)/Caregiver(s)

Classes for families teach real life solutions for personal safety.  Most often kids and parents understand the issues around safety, but they have not learned how to respond appropriately in a moment of fear or intimidation.  Instructors enable all family members to face and appropriately respond to the current issues in their lives such as bullying, teasing, peer pressure, social cruelty, facing new challenges, relationships, and unwelcome attention from both strangers and people they know.

DAVE Kids

In the past, safety courses for children focused mostly on “stranger danger.”  The unfortunate reality is that children’s boundaries are more likely to be crossed by someone they know.   Though this class covers safety concepts about being alone, how to keep a safe distance from strangers, and how to strike and flee to safety, if necessary, the primary goal is to explore what boundaries are, what safety means to the whole family, and how to communicate in an effective, age-appropriate manner.   Through role-playing and practicing, children learn both verbal and physical skills in safe, dynamic and interactive scenarios, and parents learn to protect themselves, support their children and foster a lifelong conversation about self-confidence and safety.  This class is not fear-based training. Most kids report feeling empowered and having fun.

Two 3-4 hour sessions over two days for all family members.

The Empowered School: IMPACT in Schools

Back to top of pageFINLEY-2
The Department of Justice reports that females ages 12 to 24 are at the greatest risk for experiencing rape or sexual assault.  In fact 1 in 4 college women will experience sexual assault in their first year of school.  IMPACT protects teens and young women with our school program.  At a time when even confident girls falter in their esteem as they seek to define their identities as adult women, we give them a new source of confidence: their own personal power and value.  We are proud to say that our school programs continue to grow in scope and number.

The IMPACT Colorado school program is a combination of safety policies and procedures development, physical and cultural safety audits, and experiential programming for staff, students and parents, which bring those safety procedures to life!  This program was developed in Colorado for Colorado, with the experiential programming modeled after the ovewhelmingly successful program developed in Los Angeles for independent schools over a decade ago.  For example, programs at East High, Mount View Youth Service Center, Paddington Station Preschool, and the Bridge Project, through partnerships with Goodwill Industries, Colorado Dept. of Education, and the University of Denver have served over 200 local youth in the part year.

Our school programs are designed to suit any group’s needs. There are many types of schedules available from intensive one-day workshops of three to six hours of instruction to a full semester of curriculum-based programming offered through physical education or health education departments.

Defense Against the Armed Assailant, aka Weapons Class (Women only)DSC_0192

Learn the verbal and physical skills necessary to defend against the armed assailant. Included are defense techniques against blunt objects, knives and guns. By demystifying fear and removing the Hollywood hype of weapons, women are more confident in their own defense when faced with a weapon. Scenarios are based on how women are attacked with weapons. We also teach the psychology of the attacker to help women better understand and process an attack scenario. This class includes a non-mandatory trip to the firing range.

Six 3.5-hour sessions over six weeks.
