Is there a specific class I should start with?* For adults (17+), our most comprehensive and transformational course is the Intensive series (link) - either over six weeks or two weekends. This course is perfect if you want to learn a variety of physical defense and verbal skills and to answer a lot of your "what if" questions around personal safety. We offer the Intensive either for Women (including women, trans women, and non-binary individuals comfortable in women's spaces), or All-Gender (for men, trans men, women, trans women, non-binary individuals, and those that would feel uncomfortable in a woman's space). Look at our Class Calendar (link) for Intensive courses coming soon. * Teens (12-17) should start with our Teen Intensive course (link). This course is age-appropriate and covers topics such as consent, boundary setting, risky behavior, and peer pressure, as well as physical and verbal self-defense skills. For all genders. * Families with kids (kids aged 6+ and adult parents/caregivers) will be best served by taking our IMPACT Family class (link), where we teach age-appropriate personal safety skills for the entire family. * Short on time or don't know what you want? Take a Foundations class (link) and get an idea of how IMPACT works. These 2-4 hour classes are for anyone aged 13 and up. Learn a couple useful physical techniques, verbal skills, and/or boundary setting practice. Specialized Foundations classes dig into important topics and teach a variety of skills you can use in your life, check the Class Calendar (link) for upcoming options. * If you already took an Intensive course and want to learn more and/or have even more questions about personal safety, sign up for our Advanced (link) and Weapons Defense (link) classes. These do require students to have completed an Intensive (link) class first.
-
Do you offer payment plans?Yes. We have several different payment plan options that allow you to put an initial payment down and then set up installments via our registration portal (link).
-
Do you offer financial assistance? We have a scholarship fund that allows us to offer a certain number of scholarships for reduced-cost tuition per course. Please fill out the scholarship application at this link (link), and we will contact you regarding your need. If you feel strongly that more people should have access to live-altering self-defense training and you have the means, consider making a donation (link) so we can reach more people.

What is the refund and cancellation policy?* IMPACT Colorado reserves the right to cancel a class or modify the class schedule due to low enrollment or an emergency at any time prior to the start of a class. In the event that a class is canceled, the course tuition and deposit will be refunded in full or you may transfer into another class with no transfer fee. * If you cannot make your registered class for any reason, we must receive notice of your cancellation of registration one full week (7 days) before class starts in order for you to receive a full refund of any course fees paid. If your cancellation is received less than one week before class begins, the entire amount paid to date is non-refundable, but the entire amount can be transferred to another class within one year. * If you withdraw or fail to show up to class for any reason, either on the first session or at any time during the course, there is not refund. This policy is in effect even if you sign up less than one week before the class begins.

What type of self-defense do you teach? While IMPACT owes credit to many different martial arts forms (Krav Maga, Aikido, Jiu Jitsu, etc), we are not a form of martial arts. We are an empowerment self-defense organization, which is an evidence-based violence prevention system. We use a holistic approach to personal safety, teaching a spectrum of strategies from verbal de-escalation to physical fighting skills. Our physical defense skills are based on how people are attacked in real-life, so we teach skills for both standing and ground fighting. Empowerment Self-Defense (ESD) teaches individuals how to interrupt violence by listening to their intuition, assessing their options, asserting boundaries, using de-escalation strategies, and employing tools for a range of mental, verbal, and physical responses.
-
Will these techniques work for me?We work with everyone to figure out what techniques work best for your body. Our skills are designed to be used by everyone regardless of age, gender, race, fitness level, disability, and learning style. Most importantly, we help connect you to your fighting spirit and your sense of worthiness. You are worth fighting for, we show you how.
-
What if I have an existing injury or special needs? We are committed to teaching everyone. Our instructors are skilled in adapting our techniques to work for all of our participants with physical challenges and pre-existing injuries. We have experience teaching people who use wheelchairs and assistance devices, are deaf or hard of hearing, are visually impaired, and have limb differences. We have taught people in their seventies and eighties, and those with sore knees, bad backs, hurt wrists, bum elbows, and trick ankles. If you have any concerns about if and how we can adapt to your needs, please reach out (link to contact us).

What benefits will I receive from this program? Our classes go beyond preparing you to respond when an incident occurs, in our classes you will receive: * Increased situational awareness and a greater trust in your intuition (your own internal alarm that will tell you when something isn't right) * Verbal de-escalation and boundary setting techniques that can be used with strangers and people you know * Ability to communicate effectively and directly * Increased self-esteem, confidence, and self-efficacy * Creative and flexible problem-solving skills * Healing from history of trauma * Improved leadership skills * More calm and clarity during times of stress or crisis
-
What if I'm trauma survivor, can I still take the class?"Yes! We are a trauma-informed organization, which means that all of our instructors are trained extensively in understanding how trauma shows up in the body and how to help someone through a trauma response. We focus on creating a safe and brave space for the healing process to take place. We offer several classes that move at a slower pace and can be taken in tandem with therapy, which proves to be a great process for trauma-suvivors. All of our series classes take this format. We do suggest you have done some work with a therapist or other processing of acute trauma before taking a class, as it can sometimes be intense for survivors. Please reach out if you have any questions (link).
-
What do I wear to class? In our classes, we move around quite a bit, bend, twist, and get up and down off the floor. Therefore, we suggest you wear typical workout clothes, including non-see-through sweat pants, yoga pants, or leggings. We don't recommend shorts that are loose and higher than mid-thigh since we do scoot around on the floor. Wear comfortable, breathable tops that you can move in and aren't too restrictive. If you are a person who wears bras, please wear a sports bra or similar, not a wire bra. Bring weather-appropriate layers, as we can't always control the heat/air conditioning of the spaces we are in. Bring or wear a pair of tennis/running shoes or similar. These should not be slip on, but rather able to be fairly secure on your feet. We will ask you to wipe them down from street grime before stepping on the mats (we'll provide the wipes).
-
What else should I bring to class? Please bring a full water bottle (or two depending on the length of the class) and any energy drinks or snacks that you typically need to refuel for the duration. If the class is 6+ hours in one day, we will pause for 30-60 minutes for lunch, and we suggest you bring food rather than try to find something in the short break. We don't always have access to water or refrigeration, but will let you know before the start of the class about any restrictions. Bring any health or mobility aids or medications you might need, such as inhalers, knee or wrist braces, etc. * Please fill out our intake forms online no later than 72 hours before the first class.
-
Why should I take an IMPACT class?Personal safety skills are more important now than ever before. We also understand that people don't feel they need self-defense until something scary has happened to them or in their community. And we understand that just the idea of taking a self-defense class can be intimidating for survivors, or it can feel like a waste of time in our busy lives. IMPACT is unique in that it isn't just for the statistically unlikely occurance of being attacked by a stranger, it is even more for the everyday occurances of heightened tension, boundary violations, difficult family conversations, increased stress, leadership skill building, and improving interpersonal dynamics.

What makes IMPACT different than other self-defense classes?* We teach a broader range of real-life skills in a shorter amount of time than the traditional martial arts practice. * We teach defensive skills that are easy to learn and effective for everyone to use, no matter your gender, size, fitness level, and ability. * We teach verbal and awareness skills, that help people de-escalate and/or escape situations before they become violent. * We combat myths around assault and violence. We recognize that we are more likely to be assaulted by someone we know. * Our instructors have more trauma training than other self-defense programs. We are non-victim blaming. * We teach in the adrenalized state with realistic scenarios. Therefore you don't have to do our moves thousands of times to integrate them into your procedural memory, and therefore don't have to "try to remember" what move to do if something were to happen. * We address socialization and teach skills that respond to how people are actually attacked in life. We're here to answer your questions about IMPACT, contact us today (contact link).
-
Where do you teach?IMPACT Personal Safety of Colorado teaches all over the state of Colorado and beyond. Most of our public classes are in the Denver/Boulder area, but we are willing and able to set up a class anywhere. If you want to bring IMPACT to your community, group, business, club, family, or school, we are willing to travel. To set up a private class, inquire here (link to private class inquiry).
